PARIS — The number of Gallic filmgoers in the first eight months of 2002 grew 3.4%, with 124.9 million tickets sold, compared with 120.8 million in the same period last year, according to a report by CNC, the French national film center. The report also shows French films losing market share to U.S. competition between January and August. During this period, French films held a 36.5% market share on home turf, down from 43.3% last year. This enabled U.S. films to break the 50% barrier and grab a market share of 51.9%, up from 47% in the year-earlier period.
