Dis will shutter Paris ani unit

July 9, 2003 - The Hollywood Reporter

PARIS—Walt Disney Feature Animation will close its production studio in the Parisian suburb of Montreuil-sous-Bois and lay off all of its 89 workers there, a Disney spokesperson said Tuesday in London.

The spokesperson maintained that there is no set date for the studio’s closure, but French news sources reported that it may happen as early as September.

Disney said it had sought to sell the unit for 18 months as part of company efforts to centralize animation production but had no viable offers.

The studio was involved in production work on such films as “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” “Tarzan” and “Hercules.”

The announcement was initially made to employees at a workers’ council meeting June 20, but the news was not immediately made public.
